EntrepreneuHER: Kay Hillman
Introducing, Kay Hillman - Social Media Marketing Expert.
Hi KAY! Ok, so, what do you do? How long have you done it? How did you get started?
I'm a digital marketer and I specialize in helping service providers, coaches, and consultants use social media to grow their business with ease. I believe in making social simple and creating marketing strategies that can sustain themselves or easily maintained so you can get results. I have been in business since 2018. I got started as a photographer. I was driving for Uber and Instacart even though I had 2 degrees. I couldn't find a job to save my life. I loved what I did with Uber and IC but eventually it became unsafe so I had to find something else. I became a photographer and built my business all on instagram. I grew my social accounts and had other business owners asking me how I did it. I opened my creative marketing agency - The Social Savvy Co to do social media management and then I created my community for fempreneurs - BecomingCEO so I could teach business owners how to create a business that thrives with ease online.
If you could go back 5 years, what advice would you give your younger self?
It's ok to try something new. I spent so much time thinking I had to go to school and get a good job - now look at me, I've hired myself haha. We have to be ok with just trying something new and seeing where it takes us and recognizing when we need to stop going down a path when it no longer serves us.
What tips would you give an aspiring EntrepreneuHer who wants to be in your industry?
Hire a coach and then hire help. No matter what you're doing now is NOT the time to guess about what to do next. Hire a coach, take a class, join a mastermind - invest in the success of your biz! A $25 masterclass is worth it if it saves you 3 days of trying to Google the answer. A $1000+ coach is worth it so you don't have to go months without clients and customers. Once you have invested in your education and expertise, consider how you can outsource. It doesn't have to be a team member - consider outsourcing your laundry, cooking, cleaning, or grocery shopping. Bottom line you want to figure out how to keep saving time so you can get back to your clients and more importantly your family. Lastly, don't spend all day on social media. Kinda ironic for me to say that as a social media person but seriously - social media is a tool. Even if you're a social media manager you can create boundaries around your time so you aren't spending all day on these platforms. You have better things to do. Bulk create your content, schedule it with a scheduling tool (Creator Studio, Later, Planoly, Buffer, Etc...) and then give it a break. Likes don't pay your bills so don't focus on them. Focus on building relationships and moving people off of social and onto your email list or a private community that you can control and nurture them.
What has been your greatest accomplishment in your business and personal life?
In my personal life my greatest accomplishment is becoming a mother. In my business it's being a Keynote Speaker at the Creative at Heart Conference.
What's next for you?
I hope to start back up doing in person events! I hosted an event called Mind Your Business and I'd love to host a conference and retreat in 2021/2022.
